Back From the Abyss

Emerging from the swamp of single motherhood, I'm ready to tell our story.

I knew before Abby was born that she was different. I know a lot of mothers experience active children in their womb but I'm not sure active truly describes the prenatal crusade against confinement that was happening in there. It kind of felt like the movie, Gremlins.

“Our journey to discovering all that comes with having a child like Abby"

My first child, Kaelem, could not be more different. I scheduled appointments between my appointments to check his heartbeat, the kid didn't budge. Kaelem was an easy baby; he never cried, slept through the night and giggled and cooed. I've often said that I've had houseplants that gave me more grief than my angelic son.

Abby, beautiful and vivacious Abby, cried for 4 months straight. She was clearly uncomfortable and anyone who has had a colic baby knows the despair a parent feels when they JUST WANT TO KNOW WHATS WRONG! I did everything - watched and changed my diet, sleep positions, pacifiers, swaddles, singing, pacing, I journaled, I read and researched, RINCE LATHER REPEAT. We were so desperate.

Right around 4 months she finally found some peace. The demons released and she started to laugh and play and do all those baby things and I finally felt again, the joys of parenting a new child. Abby went from crawling to tap dancing between the age of 8-1/2 - 9 months and by the time the baby babble began, we learned that Abby was hilarious. I had to start writing it all down, the animation with which she told stories and the complexion of her personality had us all in stitches.

Back from the abyss

I blogged it. I've always loved writing and it was a creative outlet for me. I had some great stuff, but parenting became more challenging and life does what it does when it demands your undivided attention, and I stopped. I kept meaning to pick it back up. I wanted to talk about our journey to discovering all that comes with having a child like Abby, but time kept going and when I failed to renew my domain, I lost everything. Gone. Into the abyss where great blogs go to die.

It crushed me. Alas, somewhere between working, single mothering, furthering my education, neuro-psych evaluations and countless doctors with follow up appointments, I wrote a couple children's books. When The Moon Thief was accepted by a publisher 6 years later, it reignited my motivation to pick it back up. Hence, it begins.
